Part 2 (Battle Humidity on Your Wedding ) will come next.

Handling humidity at home really comes down to products, prep & style.

Products:

Pick products that have anti humectant properties to them. This essentially means that they create a barrier between your hair, any pours openings (we all have em) & the moisture in the air which when it gets into your hair causes it to either deflate or grow but either way looses it’s shape.

You should be layering your products. Shampoos & conditioners, especially those with protein & moisture can help but more importantly put a leave in conditioner after towel scrunching your hair. This fills pores holes and evens out pH. Next use a styling cream, gel or balm that again is anti humectant, & anti frizz on the hair while it’s damp. After you’ve styled your hair finish it will an anti humidity spray (like Moon Landing from R+ Co) &/or hairspray. This will secure the look.

Prep:

If your hair tends to frizz or go flat you may want to do a bit of a blow out. At the very least a rough dry with tension. Yes, normally I’m all for heat free & I still am but if you have these 2 specific problems this is the specific solution. if you’re content with how it is air dried that’s A-OK too. Blow drying with tensions can help the cuticle layers all lay smoothly. This will reduce frizz. You can let your hair air dry & then go in to just lay down the frizz.

If your hair tends to fall flat dry at least the roots to give them lift. By drying them in this position it will help them combat the deflating effects of humidity that those with fine hair typically fight. You can even over exaggerate the height & direction to give more lift.

Style:

Finally choose styles that are conducive to the weather. What I mean is that some styles (down styles) are running loose & have less structural integrity. This poses a weakness against humidity especially when it’s coupled with sweat where the long hair may be laying. Instead choose styles that have some security such as half up or a lot of security such as braids. The more security the less the humidity can actually do to ruin the shape of your hair.

If you are dead set on having your hair down for a date night or zoom call I suggest you set your curls. So yes for a little while you’ll walking around with curls pinned up like a little old lady in rollers but this will add some structural integrity to down styles. The curls essentially “freeze” in that position & the longer they’re in that position the more likely they are to stay in that position even against humidity.

See, you can have good hair even if the weather is less than ideal! Finding the right combination for your hair & wants/needs will take a little trial &. error however I’m confident this will at least improve your current relationship with humidity in regards to your hair. Specific questions? Just ask! Hopefully we can help you style your daily look.
