Winter Wedding: Look Cool But Stay Warm

Brrrrrrr it’s cold in here. Ok, cold is relative but whether it’s 50 in ATX or 32 in DC we all have the shivers as temperatures dip. There’s a very real chance that if you’re having a winter wedding your time outdoors will be limited but there’s a chance that some time with be outside of a heated space. While totally not required some people want a “cozier” hairstyle to brace against the chillier weather. We have our top 3 options that can be personalized and help you looking stylishly cool on your wedding day without looking like you’re freezing to death in photos.

The first option is a down hair style. All that hair down is going to do 2 things to help your stay warmer in these winter months. It will create a barrier between you and the cold air, especially the cold moving air of gusty wind that just bites our skin. Secondly it traps in the heat of your body. Down styles can be personalized when it comes to the type of curls ( glam waves, fluffy waves, romantic curls, beach curls) , the amount of volume (none, minimal, medium, a lot, max), parting of your hair and veils/accessories.

The second option is a half up half down hairstyles. For the clients who want hair away from their face whether it’s due to aesthetic or because they just know they will touch it; this is the option for them. As for how much is up vs down that is entirely custom and to be determined between the client and stylist. I personally like to ask clients how much of their ear they do/don’t want showing. Or in the case of cold temps - do their ears easily get cold or achy from the cold? If yes, then lets leave more down than up. Also a half up look can be customized by the way the half up is up. Is it swept back? Is there a twist? Or maybe a braid? This can showcase your personality and your vibe. Of course you still have the ability to add uniqueness with accessories and veils.

The final option is a cascading style . This has the least cold protection and is the most like an updo. It will trap some heat where the cascading braid is touching the skin but anywhere it doesn’t is now exposed. A style like this is perfect for the client who has dreamed of hair in some sort of updo they could definitely not DIY regardless how much they practiced but they still want some cozy comforts. These styles are very customizable with how exactly its cascading. Is it a bushel braid or loops? Is a braid incorporated? How many face framing pieces are there? It can be made a perfect balance of cozy beauty and cool vibes.

There is one more tip! The more hair equals the more warmth. Just ask anyone who has a ton of hair and they will talk endlessly about how hot the nape of their neck can get ( myself included). Ok, so what are you supposed to do? Grow more hair?! While that is an option a quicker and perhaps easier option are extensions. They will create a thicker barrier and trap in more heat while supporting your original style and vision.

For those of us who hate being chilly and a cold blast will send chills down our spine I hope this has provided some ideas and options. No one wants to look icy in their photos as if they’re frozen in that spot all stiff and rigid. Let us know in the comments if you’re getting married in a wintery climate- how are you wearing your hair?
