Summer days are HOT! A hot, sweaty, steamy mess. I’m talking about the temperatures ! All mind out of the gutters & for real the temps are skyrocketing but weddings still happen. It may regularly be triple digits here in Austin TX but nuptials & HMU aren’t stopping. Yes, weddings slow down but they still happen & often times people struggle to find a look they love that isn’t suffocating .We have our top five ranked + take into consideration breathability + resistance to alteration because of temps.

1) High Bun: A high bun is up at the apex of your head + is far away from the nape of your neck. It’s a perfect option for those who “want it off their neck” + “away from their face”. We hear this all the time + when we do a high bun immediately comes to mind because it checks all those boxes. Now, exactly how high is up to you but to be considered a high updo it should be above the partial ridge near the apex. Not sure what style options this provides? Search “High updo”, “High bun”, “Cinderella bun” + “Pam Anderson Bun” or some combination of those. This style is resistant to alteration since you don’t have to worry about sweat as it’s not touch anything + is locked in place. Any dangling pieces or wispies may have less longevity.

2) French Twist: A French twist lands mid to high in the back of the head + there’s many modern takes on this look. So it’s worth exploring before writing it off from memory of the 1 classic version. A French twist is firmly secured + it’s not going anywhere even with the heat.It is important to be mindful about whether you want a minimlist French twist or more whimsical as a whimsical will be more forgiving if someone gives a hug +bumps against it, sweats profusely etc. A French twist is away from your neck + has fantastic breathability as well. If there are any dangling pieces they may be in range to graze the neck which isn’t inherently bad. It’s just something to be mindful of because as things touch your neck you will feel more closed in.

3) Ponytail: Wedding ponytails have taken over in popularity + I FULLY believe part of it is because people realize this look was an escape from the heat while looking cute. As for breathability + resistant to change it’s right in the middle on our rankings. It is very breathable, especially a high pony because it is up and away from your neck. However depending upon how long the ponytail is or how close/far it land to the neck can increase or reduce the breathability. It’s resistance to change should be broken into 2 parts: the head + the tail. The head ( the part on your head) isn’t going anywhere or going to change. The tail is free form though + does stand a chance of loosing curls + softening. I suggest starting with a stronger curl pattern with lots of under teasing that’s hidden to increase its longevity. Oh, + don’t touch it!

4) A Low Bun: Yes, a low bun is a great option even though it is either at the nape of your neck or right next to it. Why? It’s contained ! It’s captured in the shape it was designed so even though it may be 103 degrees outside that shape isn’t going anywhere thanks to the well designed under structure. That being said it has less breathability than the previous options as it is closer to or on your neck. You can have a low bun that’s “off the neck” but the proximity will make it warmer than a French twist, ponytail or high bun but honestly that’s just splitting hairs + it’s still a great choice. The more loose, dangling pieces the warmer + less breathable it will be.

5)Cascading / Mermaid Braid: This is for the people who want a down style but they’re getting married in the scorchy season. It gives a “down style” vibe + visual aesthetic because it frames the face + has hair around the neck area when looking directly at it but it is a surprisingly strong, resilient style + that’s why it’s on this list. Ok, breathability… it’s limited with this style. I’m being honest because while it’s far more breathable than a down style it is on your neck/back + to create these styles almost everyone needs extensions which adds literal extra weight. However before I scare you away because I truly love these styles… it is SO resilient + will not be altered! The way they are designed there is a super strong under structure that will not allow for the style to alter due to heat, wind, rain, dancing etc. I’ve seen them last through a hiking mountain elopement during a rainstorm so yes, they are well designed to handle the heat as long as you’re ok with them laying on your neck.

Styles to avoid when the weather gets toasty are down styles, half up ( if it’s longer than a bob) + glam waves. These styles are all laying against your neck creating a suffocating heat dome. This sweltering will make you sweat more + that sweat will be absorbed by the hair breaking down products which can lead to the styles not lasting as well or as long. Also all of these styles have minimal to no supportive structure. By that I mean hidden pins, elastics, etc. They just exist there + are support through a structured created with teasing + products. This is great but it’s a harder battle in the heat especially if your hair is prone to fall limp or frizz. Finally all of these styles struggle to last when you touch them ( ESPECIALLY glam waves) + that’s not any better when your hands are hot + sweaty.
